Tata Steel Nederland Considers Fast-Track Closure of Its Coke and Gas Plants
05/27/2026 - Tata Steel Nederland said it is considering closing its coke and gas plants (KGF 1 and 2) at its IJmuiden steel plant earlier than previously planned.
The company said the North Sea Canal Area Environments Agency (ODNZKG) has sent it a letter of intention to revoke the permits for its coke and gas plants. It has since told the agency that the closing of KGF 1 and 2 needs to be done in a “safe, responsible and controlled manner.”
The plants have been under the microscope since 2023, with the ONZKG imposing regulations on them in 2024 in addition to requiring them to renovate KGF 2, according to Eurometal. The agency has reportedly since lost faith that Tata Steel Nederland can fix the issues.
