Tata Steel UK Appoints Its CEO as New Chair of UK Steel

The company said Nair will undertake this role in addition to his existing responsibilities. With over 36 years of experience across the Tata Steel Group, he has played a central role in advancing the company’s transition to low-CO2 steelmaking and securing the future of domestic steel production in South Wales and beyond.

“I look forward to working with UK Steel members and stakeholders to help secure that future — working closely with Government on its Steel Strategy and addressing structural issues such as uncompetitive energy costs and the growing threat of high-emission steel imports,” said Nair.

Nair’s current role also includes being a board member of Tata Steel UK and chairing Surahammars Bruks in Sweden. He’s a Fulbright Scholar and has advanced management training from Carnegie Mellon University and CEDEP-INSEAD. He has published research and patents in galvanized steel products while being a member of World Steel Association committees and the Indian Institute of Metals.

“[Nair’s] appointment could not have come at a better time as our industry looks to modernize and grow as Government prepares to publish its Steel Strategy this autumn,” said Gareth Stace, general director of UK Steel.
