Tenova Selected to Supply World’s Largest EAF to Nippon Steel
02/05/2026 - Tenova and GE Vernova have partnered to supply the world’s largest Consteel® electric arc furnace (EAF) to Nippon Steel Corp.’s Yawata area at Kyushu Works.
The companies said the new furnace will have a heat size of 340 metric tons, a power level which is unprecedented. This will allow for the use of high percentages of virgin iron units to produce steel grades. GE Vernova will supply its direct feed power system to power the EAF.
“Our Direct Feed solution shows how advanced power technologies can support energy-intensive industries in operating more efficiently and reliably while accelerating their long-term decarbonization goals,” said Ed Torres, business leader, power conversion and storage for GE Vernova.
Nippon Steel said the Yawata project investment is important to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and its long-term decarbonization strategy.
“This record-setting EAF is not only an engineering achievement, but it also embodies a shared commitment with GE Vernova to sustainability that defines the future of our industry,” said Paolo Argenta, executive vice president, upstream business unit at Tenova.
