ThyssenKrupp Steel says that it will make significant investments to expand capacity on both sides of the Atlantic as part of its forward strategy for profitable growth.
Beginning in 2009, the steel mill currently under construction in Brazil will ship 2.1 million tonnes of steel slabs per year to Europe. ThyssenKrupp Steel will process the slabs into flat steel products at the company’s sites in Germany.
ThyssenKrupp Steel says it has decided to transship the slabs at the port of Rotterdam. The Port of Rotterdam Authority will create the necessary infrastructure, and the logistics company Steinweg will build a highly modern terminal with storage capacities and cranes. For the first time, the slabs will be handled magnetically, a process change that will result in significant cost advantages.
The new terminal will allow a combination of slab and container handling that will provide the company with maximum flexibility and productivity. Subsequent transportation of the slabs to ThyssenKrupp Steel’s production sites in Duisburg and Bochum will be by barge and rail.
To capitalize on these advantages, ThyssenKrupp Steel will concentrate its slab logistics in Rotterdam, where it has traditionally handled raw materials such as iron ore and coal. Steel exports for overseas destinations will continue to be handled via the port of Antwerp, where ThyssenKrupp Steel owns interests in a sea freight forwarding company and a transshipment terminal.
