thyssenkrupp to Idle Electrical Steel Production in Europe
12/11/2025 - thyssenkupp’s steel unit will temporarily idle production of electrical steel in Europe due to cheap imports from Asia, Reuters reported.
The company will close its electrical steel plants in Germany and France from mid-December until the end of the year. The Isbergues site in France will operate at half capacity beginning in January and will continue to do so for at least four months, Reuters reported.
According to Eurostat data, imports of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) have tripled over the past three years. In 2025, imports of GOES have increased around 50% because of the U.S. steel tariffs which have diverted supplies to Europe.
Reuters said Europe’s steel sector has been struggling due to Chinese rivals selling their excess capacity at costs cut up to a quarter. thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has already cut or outsourced 11,000 jobs due to the crisis; an additional 1,200 jobs could be lost due to the shutdowns.
