Trump Uses ‘Golden Share’ to Halt U. S. Steel Granite City Shutdown

U. S. Steel had previously informed Granite City workers the plant would close in November 2025, but they would still be paid. The Journal reported U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warned Dave Burritt, chief executive officer of U. S. Steel, the administration wouldn’t allow it.

U. S. Steel reversed its decision Friday, 19 September. In a statement, a U. S. Steel spokesperson said it would continue to supply raw steel slabs to Granite City “indefinitely.”

“Our goal was to maintain flexibility, and we are pleased to have found a solution to continue slab consumption at Granite City,” wrote U. S. Steel in a statement.
