U.S., Canada Threaten Hiked Steel and Auto Tariffs After Failed Trade Negotiations
08/25/2026 - U.S. President Donald Trump threatened increased tariffs on Canadian cars, auto parts and steel after Canada introduced a slate of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.
Trump threatened the new tariffs on Monday after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country would impose tariffs on a variety of U.S. goods. That announcement was a response to a separate set of tariffs initiated by the U.S. after trade discussions between the countries abruptly collapsed.
On Saturday, Carney said the countries were “at war” over trade and promised retaliatory measures, according to The New York Times. Those measures include tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on a variety of U.S. goods. The Canadian tariffs are to come into effect on 8 September.
