U. S. Steel’s Great Lakes Works Pickle Line Receives US$28.3 Million Upgrades
09/29/2026 - United States Steel Corporation announced it received the first of two upgrades totaling US$28.3 million to its Great Lakes Works pickle line including a state-of-the-art fiber-optic laser beam welder and dual entry shears capable of serving two passlines.
The company said the laser beam welder has been delivered while the shears will be added to the line during a 30-day outage beginning in October. The investment will also introduce new technologies to increase operating efficiency and support more reliable production.
“This investment gives them modern tools, builds new skills, and helps ensure steelmaking has a strong future in Michigan. When we invest in our people, we invest in the future of U. S. Steel,” said David Burritt, president and chief executive officer of U. S. Steel.
The upgrades will provide employees with 3D virtual training prior to installation and skills development gained on the job.
“This is just one more example of how we are strengthening facilities and leveraging modern technology to ensure U. S. Steel remains an industry leader now and well into the future,” said Scott Buckiso, executive vice president and chief manufacturing officer of North American flat-rolled segment at U. S. Steel.
