U. S. Steel Selects Midrex to Supply Big River Steel Works DRI Facility
06/15/2026 - Midrex Technologies Inc. announced it has been selected by United States Steel Corporation to supply a hot direct reduced iron and hot briquetted iron (HDRI/HBI) MIDREX® plant for its new direct reduced iron (DRI) facility at Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Ark., USA.
The company said the plant will supply HDRI to adjacent electric arc furnaces (EAFs) while also producing HBI for sales and exporting to steelmaking facilities. The natural gas–based MIDREX process with an electric melter has the capability to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%.
“This facility will serve as a flagship example of integrating direct reduction technology with modern EAF steel production while strengthening domestic manufacturing and supply chain resilience,” said K.C. Woody, president and chief executive officer of Midrex.
By linking U. S. Steel’s iron ore operations with DRI and steelmaking capabilities, the project will strengthen the “mine-to-melt” domestic supply chain, the companies said.
