U. S. Steel to Build US$3 Billion Hot Strip Mill at Mon Valley Works

The company said the investment will go toward upgrading equipment with modern technology, increasing annual production capacity and expanding its range of steels. Upgrades will include new walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press. They estimate production capacity will increase from 2.2 million metric tons annually to 3.5 million metric tons annually.

“We are bringing world-class technology to the Mon Valley, creating new capabilities for our customers and strengthening American steelmaking for the next generation,” said David Burritt, president and chief executive officer of U. S. Steel.

This investment in the Mon Valley is expected support thousands of jobs in the area and generate up to US$1.7 billion in economic impact over three years, the company said. The mill will use less fuel, eliminate a cutting step and reduce scrap to make the operations more efficient.

“This investment gives us the chance to produce steel for products that will be in demand for decades to come and compete across the automotive, appliance and line pipe markets like never before,” said Scott Buckiso, executive vice president and chief manufacturing officer at U. S. Steel.

Construction will begin after permits are received while production is expected to begin in late 2029, the company said.

The investment is in addition to the previously announced US$100 million slag granulator currently being constructed at the Edgar Thomson Plant.
