Ultrasonic Inspection Station Commissioned at Tomago
05/12/2010 - Tomago Aluminium together with Hertwich Engineering successfully commissioned in February 2010 the supplied ultrasonic inspection station, which was integrated so every billet passing through the saw plant can be quality-checked for center cracks and surface faults.
Tomago Aluminium Co. Pty. Ltd. (TAC), NSW, Australia, together with Hertwich Engineering successfully commissioned the supplied ultrasonic inspection station in February 2010.
The two-probe, linear billet inspection station is part of, and was supplied together with, a billet saw, which was commissioned in September 2009. After an obsolete saw was removed, the ultrasonic inspection station was integrated, so that every billet passing through the saw plant can be quality-checked with fully automatic inspection for center cracks and surface faults.
The production of the saw is 140,000 tonnes per year of billet with diameters of 152 to 350 mm; the new ultrasonic inspection station meets the saw production. If faulty billets are found, they can be temporarily accumulated separately for later scrap-sawing, so that routine testing is not interrupted.
Hertwich Engineering GmbH is an Austrian company of the SMS group, which is, under the roof of the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of two business areas: SMS Siemag and SMS Meer. In 2009, some 9000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of more than EUR 3.8 billion.
