voestalpine’s Donawitz Site Completes Installation of New EAF

The company said cold commissioning includes testing conveyor systems, hydraulic systems, electrical installations, cooling circuits and automation systems. The company estimates it will produce about 850,000 metric tons of green steel annually.

“With greentec steel, Austria’s largest climate protection program, in Linz and Donawitz we are right on schedule — both in terms of time and budget. The major construction and installation work will be completed in 2026, before the first melts take place in the new electric arc furnaces in Donawitz and Linz in the first half of 2027,” said Herbert Eibensteiner, chief executive officer of voestalpine AG.

Danieli is the lead partner on the project along with C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. They are coordinating the installation of the EAF’s core components and its first operation. Over 70 companies are working on the project.

“The installation and commissioning of the new electric arc furnace are technically extremely challenging and requires close collaboration between our specialists and partner companies,” Eibensteiner continued.

The company said once all the systems are working together, they will proceed to the next step toward production. They schedule this for the first half of 2027, with expansion to fully electrified steel production estimated for 2030.
