Volvo CE Goes Green on Serial Production of Articulated Haulers

The company said around 13% of the total mass of steel in their articulated haulers in Braås is now replaced with green steel. They estimate this will reduce their total CO2 emissions by around 13,000 tons annually.

“We are proud to lead the way in the industry and move forward towards minimizing our climate footprint across the entire lifecycle of our products,” head of Volvo CE’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) program Rickard Alm said.

The company’s holistic approach to carbon reduction targets both the machine’s operation and the materials it’s made from. Volvo CE Braås was recently the first of the company’s facilities to reach Climate Efficient Site status, having previously become their first carbon-neutral premises in 2014. They were also the first construction equipment production facility in the world to be powered by renewable energy.

“While emissions from product use represent the vast majority of carbon output in our industry, it is important to also act to cut emissions in the production phase, including materials like steel, in close collaboration with our global supply partners,” said Alm.

The company said they intend to increase the amount of green steel used in their products as availability of the material increases in collaboration with their supply chain.
