Yamato Steel Taps SMS group to Modernize Section Mill
02/17/2026 - SMS group announced it has been selected to modernize Yamato Steel Co. Ltd.’s section mill, replacing two mill stands with new compact cartridge mill stands (CCS®), in Himeji, Japan.
The companies said the project will include upgrading the existing universal roughing and edger mill stands with SMS’s CCS technology. The scope includes the CCS 1000 and CCS 500 E mill stands to produce products including H- and I-beams and U-type sheet piles and the CCS tandem rolling mill control system (TCS). SMS will provide the engineering, core equipment, automation, technical assistance, spare parts and changing parts.
The mill stands will have universal and 2-high rolling modes, hydraulic roll adjustment and quick-automatic change facilities. It will also have new work roller tables with flange cooling and high-pressure descaling units.
The companies said they expect the modernization to be completed by summer 2028.
