ABB, Paragon Energy Solutions to Develop Integrated Solutions for U.S. Nuclear Power Industry

The companies said their collaboration will include the development of a single-vendor solution covering both critical and noncritical areas of nuclear facilities, supporting operations at both existing plants and next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs.)

“As the demand for reliable and low-carbon energy grows, our partnership will help utilities modernize current nuclear infrastructure and support advanced reactors such as next-generation SMRs with high-integrity solutions,” said Doug VanTassell, president and chief executive officer of Paragon.

ABB will provide automation, electrification and digital solutions for the noncritical areas of nuclear plants. This includes control room systems, electrical auxiliary components and the ABB UNITROL excitation system. Other technologies they can deliver include those that support asset performance management and cyber security.

Paragon will provide solutions for critical area systems within a nuclear facility. This includes critical instrumentation and control solutions such as safety automation systems, neutron monitoring and essential electrical components, including breakers, switchgear and motor control centers. They will also oversee component qualification and dedication to meeting industry standards.

“The opportunity to innovate and use technology is crucial for success and to support the safe and efficient operation of nuclear facilities. Partnering with Paragon enables us to develop integrated solutions that enhance plant performance and reliability,” said Per Erik Holsten, president of ABB’s energy industries division.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a US$900 million funding initiative for SMRs to advance nuclear energy technologies.
