ABB to Modernize ArcelorMittal Rolling Mill, Pickle Line
11/14/2007 - ABB has been awarded a contract by the ArcelorMittal Group to modernize the cold rolling mill located in the city of Crakow, Poland; ABB will also support ArcelorMittal’s pickle line upgrade in the same facility.
ABB has been awarded a contract worth more than 14 million € from the ArcelorMittal Group to modernize the cold rolling mill located in the city of Crakow, Poland.
The order includes the complete modernization of the mechanical and electrical components of the facility’s 4-stand tandem rolling mill. Key components of the project include the provision of new DC supply units for the main and auxiliary drives, new motor control centers, and retention of the existing DC motors. ABB will also fit the rolling mills with new work roll bending control systems and new measuring systems for strip thickness and flatness control.
ABB will also supply a new Level 1 automation system, including the technological control systems, based on System 800xA, a state-of-the-art process control platform. The 800xA is equipped with the AC800PEC, ABB’s high-speed controller for rolling mill applications. ABB will also provide Level 2 systems, with the mathematical model for the tandem rolling mill and the pass schedule computer for the temper mill.
Engineering services, project management, installation and commissioning aspects of the project are also part of the order.
In addition to modernization of the cold rolling mills, ArcelorMittal is also refurbishing the pickling line within the same production complex, which is the former Huta Sendzimira. ABB will supply the new AC drives, welding transformer, motor control centers for the new hydraulic system, and new DC supply units for the main and auxiliary drives’ existing DC motors. For the pickle line upgrade, ABB will also supply Level 1 and Level 2 automation, all engineering services, project management, and installation and commissioning.
