ABB to Supply Drive System for Hyundai Plate Mill Expansion

Hyundai Steel Company recently awarded a contract to ABB to supply the drive system for extension of its existing heavy plate mill in the Chungnam province of South Korea.

The plate mill expansion will significantly increase Hyundai Steel’s production capacity. The integrated mill, which currently produces 1.5 million tonnes of high-quality automotive and shipbuilding steel plates per year, will increase its annual capacity to 2.0 million tonnes and expand its product range.

ABB’s scope of supply includes a comprehensive drive system with low- and medium-voltage drives that utilize Direct Torque Control (DTC), motors, and other electrical equipment. ABB will also provide project engineering, supervision, commissioning, training and other support services. The expanded plate mill is scheduled to start operation at the end of 2013.

ABB’s patented DTC concept provides dynamic performance in terms of torque and speed while maintaining superior precision. The upgrade will help Hyundai Steel to maximize the plate mill’s productivity and equipment reliability while optimizing its energy use. The expansion will also help to increase production speed and throughput volume while maintaining precise material specifications and high quality.

“Our successful history and excellent working relationship with this customer helped us to win this important order,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “We are committed to achieve Hyundai Steel’s new production and efficiency goals at this site and will provide proven technical solutions, services and support.”

ABB worked with Hyundai Steel on the first phase project for this mill, and delivered a similar scope of supply, in 2007. The mill went into operation at the end of 2009.
