AISI and SMA Comment
on Merger Discussions
April 2, 2004 — The following statement is being issued jointly by AISI Chairman David S. Sutherland and SMA Chairman Keith Busse:
“As previously reported, the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) representatives engaged in discussions late last year with regard to a potential merger between both groups to form an entirely new trade association representing the steel industry.
“After serious, in-depth consideration, both the AISI and the SMA have concluded that their interests are best served by maintaining and strengthening the present trade group organizations.
“Nonetheless, these merger discussions produced useful results. Both trade groups identified areas of potential mutual cooperation, which will increase the effectiveness of each group. Additional issues amenable to such joint efforts will be identified and addressed.
“Both groups look forward to a closer working relationship together and with the other steel trade groups representing the North American steel industry.
