Algoma Steel Achieves First Production Milestone on New EAF
07/11/2025 - Canadian producer of hot- and cold-rolled steel sheet and plate products Algoma Steel celebrated its first arc and steel production at Unit One of its new state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF) in Ontario.
The company said all steel produced through its EAFs will be called Volta™ in honor of Alessandro Volta, who first harnessed electricity in 1800. The machines will be powered by Ontario’s clean energy grid and are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70%, helping to fuel the growth of the low-carbon economy.
“Bringing the first EAF on-line during a period of trade uncertainty underscores our determination to innovate and lead, opening new opportunities as we begin to realize the full potential of EAF steel production,” said Michael Garcia, president and chief executive officer of Algoma.
The milestone was achieved after over ten days of successful electric arc testing and tuning including individual and tandem tests of the nine Q-One transformer modules, the company said.
