Algoma Steel Group Suspends EAF Production Due to Unplanned LSP Outage

The company said the affected turbine unit detected an abnormal condition and was automatically taken off-line, but no other units were affected. Technical teams and external specialists are currently assessing the affected equipment.

The company said they are working with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to find alternative power supply arrangements to restart EAF operations while the LSP is being repaired. They are also working with GE Vernova to commission its contracted spare turbine at the site.

To reduce future planned downtime, LSP and other operating maintenance are also being conducted. While the company doesn’t expect current customer delivery dates to be affected, future shipment volumes could be affected by the outage.

The company said it expects the EAF outage to last less than 21 days. If the arrangement with IESO goes through, it could allow the EAF to be restarted within about 10 days.
