Algoma Steel Shuts Down Cokemaking, Looks to Green Steel Future

The move marks the beginning of the end to more than 100 years of integrated steelmaking at the Ontario facility, which will be taking other assets out of service soon, Laura Devoni, Algoma vice president for human resources and corporate affairs, told SooToday.

"The shutdown of ironmaking and basic oxygen furnace steelmaking assets will follow in the next few days,” Devoni said.

Algoma had planned to keep its blast furnace operating until the end of the decade, but it recently decided to accelerate the process conversion in the face of market challenges.

The company began production of green steel on its No. 2 EAF in the summer of 2025, with construction of the No. 1 EAF still in progress, according to Devoni.

"We expect both furnaces to be fully operational later this year," Devoni said.
