Auction Scheduled for Alton Steel Equipment

Set for 8–10 April, the auction covers all facets of the of the mill, everything from its Mannesmann Demag 220-ton electric arc furnace to glassware in its chemistry and metrology lab.

“The sale includes equipment from across the steel production process, from melting and rolling operations to finishing, plant support, and material handling — making it attractive to steel producers, fabricators, service centers, equipment dealers, and global buyers looking to expand capacity or acquire high-value assets at auction pricing,” auction managers GA Group and Capital Recovery Group said in a statement.

Alton Steel unexpectedly closed on 26 January, marking the end of its 25-year run. The successor to Laclede Steel Co., Alton launched operations in 2003. The company said it was forced to close due to insurmountable industry challenges.

“We have worked tirelessly to modernize this facility and remain competitive. But we've reached a point where the fundamental structural challenges cannot be overcome. The steel industry has changed dramatically, and as a privately held company, we cannot access the capital required to compete with larger, publicly traded competitors that have newer facilities and modern equipment,” Alton chief executive officer Chris Ervin said in a statement.

According to the auction organizers, Alton Steel’s production equipment, spares, consumables, raw materials and electrical infrastructure are being listed.

“Industrial auctions involving entire steel mills are relatively uncommon, making the Alton sale particularly notable. The opportunity to acquire both production equipment and plant infrastructure from a single facility presents unique advantages for buyers seeking integrated systems,” the organizers said.

Alton operated a Mannesman Demag 220-ton and a 120-ton electric arc furnace with a 220-ton ladle metallurgy furnace, a Koppers 6-strand continuous billet caster, and a Moeller & Neumann bar mill that could produce rounds, round-cornered squares, and hexes in diameters ranging from 0.75 inch to 3.9 inches.
