ArcelorMittal Begins Bringing Up Alabama EAF
05/04/2025 - ArcelorMittal has begun commissioning the new electric arc furnace (EAF) and caster at its Calvert, Ala., USA, joint-venture sheet mill, the steelmaker has said.
During a conference call last week to discuss the company’s first-quarter earnings, chief financial officer Genuino Christino said the first slab on the new equipment is expected before the end of June. In parallel, the company has started planning the certification process with automotive customers, he added.
Once the furnace is started, the company will look to swiftly ramp up production.
“Our expectation is that it should take us about 12 months to be at a full run rate. So I would expect that by the end of the year, we should be at a very high level of run rate already,” Christino said.
According to ArcelorMittal, the 1.5-million-metric-ton furnace will be the be the first EAF in North America capable of supplying exposed automotive grades with domestically melted and poured material.
