ArcelorMittal Ostrava Employees Help Non-profits

ArcelorMittal Ostrava employees recently worked in 24 non-profit organizations within their company volunteering program. The 136 volunteers decorated walls; cleaned various premises, carpets, and windows; collected leaves in streets; and built and decorated fences. They also organized the distribution of presents by St. Nicolas for children at hospitals and a musical performance for children at kindergarten.

“Last year there was a very positive response to volunteering, and that is why we have contacted non-profit organizations this year as well. Thus, our employees are able to help the needy in many various ways,” said Monika Pěnčíková, Head of Corporate Responsibility at ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

Corporate volunteering is a great way to connect the commercial and non-profit sectors, according to the company’s CEO. ”I am happy that our employees are enthusiastic about the idea of joining the campaign where small actions produce big results. That is why the management of the company enables and supports this noble activity,” said Augustine Kochuparampil.

The biggest volunteer group, consisting of 30 employees, worked at the Special Elementary School in Vítkovice. Other volunteers assisted in charity homes, orphanages, hospices, social service centers, and at the Ostrava Zoo.

Lenka Antošová from Corporate Responsibility of ArcelorMittal Ostrava noted that more than two thousand employees have taken part in projects to support non-profit organizations in 2009.
