ArcelorMittal Poland Commissions Danieli RH2 Rail Head-Hardening System
07/01/2025 - ArcelorMittal Poland has turned to Danieli for its RH2 rail hardening technology for use at its facility in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
The Danieli Research Center carried out research and development of the RH2 technology in Buttrio, Italy. There, they investigated the head treatment and foot cooling on the rail on a full-scale model of a portion of the machine. The technology is now implemented and fully commissioned at the new plant.
Danieli said the rail lengths can go up to 128 m with linear weight between 45–68 kg/m. The hardness levels are more than 400HB while the productivity rate is 22.5 rails per hour.
The Danieli RH2 system doesn’t use air blowers for quenching and there are no additional heating devices required for head/tail temperature equalization. The company estimates this will result in a 45% lower production cost and 35% lower power consumption, leading to lower operating expenses compared to other rail head-hardening technologies.
A Danieli Automation control system with a dedicated programmable logic controller and human-machine interface for automatic process settings and control of the system is also included.
ArcelorMittal Poland intends to deliver premium head-hardened long rails according to the latest European and American standards. Their goal is to do so in an efficient and environmentally friendly way with low CO2 emissions and clean quenching solutions, the company said.
