ArcelorMittal reported a net loss of $792 million on sales of $15.176 billion for the second quarter, and a net loss of $1.855 billion on sales of $30.298 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2009.

Second Quarter Results—The $792 million net loss ($0.57 loss per share) compares to a net loss of $1.063 billion ($0.78 per share) in the previous quarter (1Q09) and net income of $5.839 billion (4.20 per share) in the year-ago second quarter. EBITDA of $1.2 billion reflects a 38% increase as compared to the previous quarter (1Q09). Results reflect exceptional charges of $1.2 billion pre-tax.

Sales of $15.18 billion compare to sales of $15.12 billion in the previous quarter (1Q09) and sales of $37.84 billion for the year-ago second quarter. Shipments of 17.0 million tonnes compare to shipments of 29.8 million tonnes for the year-ago second quarter. The company said the decline is primarily attributable to the extreme weakness in demand for steel products due to the global economic crisis, along with a steep fall in prices.

ArcelorMittal recorded an operating loss of $1.2 billion, which compares to an operating loss of $1.5 billion for the previous quarter and operating income of $6.6 billion for the year-ago second quarter. Management Comments—“The first six months of the year have been some of the most challenging the steel industry has ever experienced,” said Lakshmi N. Mittal, Chairman and CEO, ArcelorMittal, commenting on results. “Operating in such a difficult environment, I am pleased with the way in which ArcelorMittal has responded to adapt production, cut costs and strengthen our balance sheet.

“In recent weeks we have started to see some initial signs of recovery, as a result of which we are now planning to re-start production at some facilities,” added Mittal. “Provided there are no further unexpected economic deteriorations, we should see continued gradual improvement throughout the second half of the year, with full recovery remaining slow and progressive.”
