ArcelorMittal Supports Search for Paryavaran Ambassador

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, has been named the first "Bharat ka Paryavaran Ambassador" in a campaign supported by ArcelorMittal to choose a spokesperson for children on sustainability.

This poll was part of the CO2 Pick Right-Kaun Banega Bharat Ka Paryavaran Ambassador Program implemented by the Center for Environment Education in partnership with ArcelorMittal for the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in India.

The Pick Right campaign is part of the ministry's climate change education program for schools in India; more than 70,000 schools sent in their votes for the election. Children voted for their teachers, environmentalists, and celebrities, but Kalam was the children’s top choice.

"I am delighted to have been chosen as the Paryavarn Ambassador by the children of India,” Kalam said. “Over the last eight years, I have met over 5 million children and made them take an oath. Today, too, I want the children…to take an oath to plant and nurture at least 10 trees each."

ArcelorMittal has pledged $2 million to support the Pick Right campaign over the next four years to help develop 20 million children as “green leaders” across India. The education of future generations is a key part of ArcelorMittal's Corporate Responsibility program.

"Environmental sustainability is a key value to ArcelorMittal,” said Vijay Bhatnagar, CEO India & China, ArcelorMittal. “This unique project that connects our boardroom to classrooms all over India will strengthen our commitment to a better tomorrow."
