Baosteel Contributes to the Olympic Cause

With the much-anticipated start of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Baosteel reflects on its support of the Olympic Games, reflecting the company’s strong sense of social responsibility.

According to the statistics, 70,000 tonnes of high-quality steel products from Baosteel have been used in the construction of more than 10 Olympic stadiums, including the "Bird nest" (the National Stadium) and related projects. Baosteel also donated US $1 million to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, becoming the world's only steel enterprise donor in the Olympic Museum Donator Wall.

After Beijing's successful Olympic bid, Baosteel actively participated in the supply of steel for the Olympic projects. Baosteel also set up a supply center of key engineering materials and a steel research and development team for the Olympic Projects, which communicated and exchanged views with the construction headquarters, the Beijing Urban Construction Group and other construction companies, to help launch new product development ahead of time. Within a few short months, a number of high-grade, high-performance structural steels, such as Q345GJ, Q420, etc., were successfully developed and applied to the "Bird nest" and other Olympic stadium construction.

According to the company, Olympic projects and other integrated projects are mostly implemented when the design, purchase and construction are intercrossed, with a tight schedule and frequent design changes, which can result in numerous difficulties for material supply for the projects. In the process of material supply for the "Bird nest", Baosteel made every effort to cut the original delivery period from one-and-a-half months to half a month. Baosteel also brought into full play the industrial supply-chain synergies, and formed a complete industrial chain from raw material supply to the steel structure design, manufacture and installation. For projects such as the new CCTV tower, Baosteel not only supplied high-quality steel, but also made the design of steel structure. And in the Beijing Automobile Museum project known as the "Big Eye", the Baosteel Supervision Co. won the bid and became the only one supervision company participating in Olympic construction project.

For the main Olympic stadiums Bird nest (National Stadium),Water Cube (National Aquatics Center), National Gymnastic Center, National Convention center, Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venue, and the integrated  stadiums, New CCTV tower, and Terminal Three of Capital International Airport, Baosteel supplied over 70, 000 tonnes steel, including heavy plate, hot rolled plate, color coated plate, etc.

Baosteel's passion for the Olympics is also reflected in its active support for the Olympic cause. On November 28, 2006, Baosteel submitted a Donation Application to the Olympic Museum, promising to donate one million US dollars, and thus, Baosteel became the first and only steel enterprise applying for donation.

On February 2, 2007, Baosteel signed a Donation Agreement with the Olympic Museum, and the donated fund will be used for sustainable development of the Olympic Museum and Spreading of the Olympic spirit. On June 12 of the same year, the bright China's national flag was raised in the square of the Olympic Museum, and the name of Baosteel was engraved on the Donors' Wall of the Olympic Museum.

In the donation ceremony, Jacques Rogge, President of International Olympic Committee said that: "From now on, the name of Baosteel will live in the Wall of the Olympic Museum forever, and the world will focus their attentions on Baosteel and Beijing Olympics!
