Baosteel Receives First Order for Automotive Super High Strength Steel
07/08/2009 - Baosteel signs contract with a northern automaker for the purchase of super high strength steel with 1200-Mpa tensile strength for the manufacture of automotive components.
Baosteel announced that it has recently signed a contract with a northern automaker for the purchase of super high strength steel (tensile strength = 1200 Mpa) for the manufacture of automotive components.
This is the company’s first order for super high strength steel received since production was initiated this March on the new special line for high strength steel. Baosteel’s investment in the new line supports the company’s goal to develop its production for the super high strength steel market.
The overseas automotive industry commonly uses automotive super high strength steel in safety structural members. While these grades can help to reduce the weight of the automobile body while also enhancing structural safety, they are seldom used by the domestic automotive industry at present. Building on years of development work, Baosteel built the first line in China that is specifically designed for the production of automotive high strength steel.
Prior to signing the contract with Baosteel, the northern automaker conducted experimental verification for Baosteel’s 1200-MPa super high strength steel, which the company had produced in April. Results show that when compared with formerly used materials, Baosteel's new super high strength steels can help to reduce thickness and weight by one half while considerably reducing manufacture costs.
