BHP Billiton Approves Further Expansion of Newcastle Coal Facility
09/01/2011 - BHP Billiton has approved a further investment of US$367 million for the third stage of development of the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group’s coal handling facility in Newcastle, Australia.
BHP Billiton has approved a further investment of US$367 million (covering BHP Billiton’s share) for the third stage of development of the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group’s coal handling facility in Newcastle, Australia.
The port expansion project will increase total annual capacity at the coal terminal from the current 53 million tonnes to 66 million tonnes. The first coal on the new ship loader is scheduled to occur in the 2014 financial year, with the terminal expected to operate at full capacity within the following 12 months.
BHP Billiton’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Hunter Valley Energy Coal Pty Ltd, is a 35.5% shareholder in the holding company of the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group. The expansion will increase BHP Billiton’s annual allocation at Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group by a further 4.6 million tonnes, bringing it allocation to 19.2 million tonnes, helping to support the future expansions of the Mt Arthur Coal mine, located approximately five kilometers south of Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia.
“We are steadily growing the Mt Arthur Mine and evaluating the development of Caroona,” said BHP Billiton Energy Coal President, Jimmy Wilson. “This port expansion underpins the future of these two sites.”
