BlueScope Steel Plans Blast Furnace Reline at Port Kembla

BlueScope Steel announced that it has received formal approval for its planned $370 million reline of Blast Furnace No. 5 at its Port Kembla Steelworks. The company has been planning three years for the reline, which will now proceed on schedule.

Blast Furnace No. 5, one of BlueScope Steel’s two blast furnaces, was built in 1972 and currently produces 2.6 million tonnes of iron per year. It was last relined in 1991. The company’s other blast furnace, No. 6, was built in 1996 and is also located in the Port Kembla Steelworks.

“No. 5 Blast Furnace is one of the company’s key assets, and has served us well during its current 18-year campaign,” said Noel Cornish, BlueScope Steel’s Chief Executive, Australian & New Zealand Steel Manufacturing Businesses. “The reline project will be a comprehensive overhaul of the facility, and will restore the blast furnace to peak operating condition and secure our ironmaking capacity for many years to come.”

“Domestic external sales are not expected to be materially affected during the project,” said Cornish, “and we have contacted export customers who will be affected and they will make alternative arrangements during the reline period.”

Blast Furnace No. 5’s reline, which is scheduled to take 105 days, will take place in the first half of 2009.
