BlueScope Takes Union to Court Over Walk-Out
07/08/2016 - Australia’s BlueScope Steel Ltd. is suing a labor union for conducting a one-day walk-out in May, reports Australian public broadcaster ABC.
According to the ABC, the country’s largest steelmaker is seeking millions in compensation or penalties for the walk-out. The Australian Workers Union estimates the action, which was illegal under Australian labor laws, cost the company AU$2.4 million in lost production.
The work stoppage took place at a metallic coating and painting facility in New South Wales.
Wayne Phillips, secretary of the union branch that initiated the walk-out, said the branch likely would fold if the company’s claims prevail in court.
