Carnegie Mellon University Receives US$3 Million Federal Grant
06/22/2023 - The U.S. Department of Energy awarded Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) a US$3 million grant to establish a program to advance decarbonization technology in the steel industry.
According to a press release, the program will evaluate a system that uses hydrogen instead of carbon to extract oxygen from iron ore and hopes to show that certain parts of the steelmaking process can be completed by using 90% hydrogen. CMU’s project will also help the Department of Energy’s efforts to create Low Emissions Steel Manufacturing Research Program.
“This is a big deal and just the beginning of our work toward a future where Western Pennsylvania sets the blueprint for cutting-edge green manufacturing, economic opportunity and innovation, clean air and water, and good-paying union jobs,” U.S. Representative Summer Lee said in a statement.
