China Steel Becomes First Steel Mill to Apply UNFCCC ACM0012

China Steel Corp. has become the first steel mill worldwide to apply the Project Design Document issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UFNCCC).

China Steel Corp. has been working with China Petrochemical Development Corp. since the end of 2007 on a district energy conservation project. That project—China Steel’s first to follow the rules of UFNCCC’s Project Design Document—has attained outstanding CO2 reduction performance as certified by the well-known Norwegian company, Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The project is projected to reduce 230,000 tonnes of CO2 emission every year for seven contract years.

China Steel has been promoting district energy conservation in Lin-Hai Industrial Park since 1993. Through this scheme, China Steel and its neighbor companies will be equipped to balance energy supply and consumption, which will ultimately result in higher energy efficiency, lower pollution and lower costs. China Steel said it will use this experience to help support the government’s and industry’s efforts to curb global warming and reinforce social responsibility.
