Chinese Tin Mill Products Benefiting From Unfair Subsidies, U.S. Commerce Department Rules
06/21/2023 - The U.S. Department of Commerce has ruled that unfairly subsidized exports of Chinese tin mill products are harming domestic producers and set countervailing duties of 89%.
In a preliminary determination on Wednesday, the Commerce Department also set a countervailing duty of nearly 543% against tin mill exports from Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd.
The Commerce Department launched an anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigation against exports from Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom this winter on a complaint from Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and the United Steelworkers union.
Preliminary anti-dumping determinations are due in August.
Cleveland-Cliffs, which is laying off 300 people at its Weirton, W.Va., USA, tin mill operation this month, said it applauded the preliminary determination.
