Citing Tariffs, Ontario Steel Producer to Reduce Workforce
12/03/2025 - A Canadian steelmaker is laying off roughly one-third of its workforce as it grapples with U.S. steel tariffs and accelerates its transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Algoma Steel will eliminate about 1,000 jobs in 16 weeks. The company said the Trump administration’s 50% tariff on steel imports has greatly reduced access to the U.S. market.
Laura Devoni, Algoma’s vice president of human resources and corporate affairs, said the layoff are necessary “to protect Algoma’s future in the face of these extraordinary and external market forces,” The Journal reported.
Algoma also recently announced an acceleration of its conversion to electric arc furnace steelmaking and a curtailment of coil production.
