Danieli to Deliver Hot-Rolled Coil Mini-Mill Project for Marcegaglia
08/29/2025 - Marcegaglia and Danieli have agreed to initiate the engineering phase of the flat product mini-mill project in Fos-sur-Mur, France.
Danieli said it will deliver a fully automated mini-mill, named the Mistral Project, including all the production equipment for scrap preparation, electric steelmaking, slab casting and hot strip rolling.
The Mistral Project will produce up to an estimated 2.1 million metric tons annually of stainless and carbon steel hot-rolled coils. This will supply Marcegaglia’s cold rolling complex in Ravenna, Italy, to cover about 30% of the company’s hot-rolled coil demand.
The electric steel meltshop will have a Danieli Farstarc Zerobucket furnace with ECS continuous scrap charging, Tornado preheating system and Q-Melt adaptive process control with autopilot.
Liquid steel will be processed by twin ladle refining stations and twin tank vacuum degassers. The company said this will ensure energy efficiency and reduced CO2 and NOx emissions.
The single-stand caster will produce carbon steel slabs estimated at 200 to 250 mm in thickness. They will partly feed both the new mill and Marcegaglia’s plate mill in San Giorgio di Nogaro, Italy.
The facility will feature an integrated Steckel mill and hot strip mill setup within a single configuration. It has a roughing stand adaptable for Steckel operation and a 5-stand finishing mill. Marcegaglia said this will allow it to roll stainless steel slabs from its Sheffield plant in Steckel mode. It will also enable them to roll carbon steel slabs from the caster in continuous mode through the 5-stand finishing mill.
Danieli said it will also supply advanced water and fume treatment systems, along with Danieli Automation process control systems.
The companies said production is expected to start by mid-2028.
