March 2007 — Tangshan Guofeng Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., P.R. China, recently awarded an order to Danieli Wean United for a second new hot strip mill.

Danieli Wean United had previously supplied a 1450-mm hot strip mill Tangshan Guofeng that the company is still operating. The new three million tonne/year state-of-the-art facility will be located in the same site.

The new hot strip mill will produce strip with thickness ranging from 1.2 to 12.7 mm. Product mix will be carbon steel (30%); high-quality carbon steel (55%); low-alloy steel, including pipe grades up to X70- (10%); and non-oriented Si-steel (5%).

For the new facility, Danieli Wean United will install a 4-high reversing roughing stand with attached vertical edger, hot coil box and rotary drum shear, and seven 4-high finishing stands. The U-tube type cooling section will include two downcoilers and a coil conveyor line. A slab descaler will precede the roughing stand, and a water descaler will precede the finishing stands.

The mill will feature modern design concepts and technological advancements including an edger with hydraulic automatic width control (HWAC), hydraulic automatic gauge control (HAGC), positive bending, work roll shifting, and shape roll (to improve the flatness control capability).

The first coil is expected to be rolled by mid-March 2008, with Danieli equipment delivery expected within 10 months from contract effectiveness.
