Danieli to Supply SSAB’s New Green Mini-Mill

The new mini-mill will produce hot-rolled strip in thicknesses ranging from 1.3 to 25.4 mm with widths up to 2,100 mm and coils up to 40 metric tons. Steel grades will be produced by electric melting supported by technological packages, two twin ladle refining stations and two twin-tank vacuum degassers. The company estimates endless scrap charging will improve furnace efficiency and reduce NOx emissions.

The meltshop will include two 210-metric-ton Digimelters featuring a Q-One power feeder with thermal recovery for district heating, ECS continuous scrap charging and a MeltModel suite for control of the melting profile, the company said.

Danieli said it will also deliver its QSP-DUE casting-rolling technology to ensure high productivity and product quality. The DySenCaster will produce slabs in thicknesses ranging from 110 to 140 mm.

The first 100% electric tunnel furnace will feature both induction modules and electrical resistance devices. The dry rolls will deliver electrical energy consumption savings while an integrated slab scarfer will allow in-line processing to meet the requirements for quality critical applications, the company said.

Total quality management using Digi&Met solutions and robotics will automate the plant from its scrap handling to the coil yard.

Danieli said it will also supply auxiliary plants such as a fume treatment plant and a water treatment plant, as well as automated scrap-charging cranes.

The company estimates the mini-mill will produce 2.5 million metric tons of hot-rolled strip a year.
