Danieli to Upgrade
Nucor
Darlington Rolling Mill
Feb. 26, 2004 — Danieli will carry out a major upgrade of Nucor Steel’s No. 2 Mill at Darlington, S.C., as part of Nucor’s efforts to increase mill uptime and efficiency.
Danieli will replace the mill’s existing 9-stand horizontal intermediate finishing mill with a new state-of-the-art 10-stand twist-free mill. The replacement section will consist of latest-generation Danieli SHS stands, arranged in horizontal, vertical and convertible configuration. All new stands will be served by automatic quick-changing facilities.
In 2003, Danieli carried out modernization of Darlington’s No. 1 small size mill. This project included complete replacement of the cooling bed, stacker and finishing facilities. |
In 1998, this same mill underwent an initial upgrade with installation of a CCL on-line multi-strand continuous straightening and cut-to-length station downstream of the cooling bed.
Darlington’s No. 2 mill produces 16- to 35-mm diameter rebars (with multi-strand slitting for the smaller sizes), 41- to 90-mm diameter round bars, 75- to 200-mm flats, 45- to 127-mm angles and corresponding channels at rates of up to 75 tons per hour. In hot-charge mode, the mill can run at 90 tons per hour.
Startup of the upgraded No. 2 mill will be carried out in early 2005.
