Essar Steel Commissions Second Conarc Furnace at Hazira
12/02/2011 - Essar Steel has commissioned its second Conarc Furnace at its Hazira steel complex. The new furnace will expand the meltshop’s annual capacity to 5 million tonnes.
Essar Steel has commissioned its second Conarc Furnace at its Hazira steel complex. The new furnace, which has an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes, will expand the meltshop’s annual capacity to 5 million tonnes.
Charges for the new Conarc Furnace will come from the facility’s 1.73 million tonne/year blast furnace, 1.74 million tonne/year DRI plant, and two 87 million tonne/year Corex units.
The Conarc furnace is the latest major unit commissioned by the company as part of its 10-million tonne expansion project. Startup of the furnace was preceded by commissioning of all steelmaking, ironmaking and rolling units, and a Corex unit is slated for commissioning later this year.
The facility’s 1.45 million tonne/year continuous caster is already in full operation as is the 2.5 million tonne/year compact strip production (CSP) mill. The CSP is capable of producing strips of thickness as low as 0.8 mm, which is the thinnest rolled steel in India according to the company. Products from the mill are sold for diverse applications in general engineering, line pipes for the hydrocarbon industry, welded tubes, electrical steel, the automotive industry and LPG. The mill also is capable of producing high strength steels including Dual Phase steel.
According to Essar Steel, this will be India’s largest flat steel facility at any single location and amongst the ten largest facilities in the world. It will also be one of the few steel facilities that are fully integrated and will produce the entire range of flat products. The company’s total investment in the Hazira steel complex is Rs.30,000 crores (US$ 6 billion).
Essar has also invested in various supporting infrastructure at Hazira, including 1015-MW power plants and a 30 million tonne/year all-weather port at total investment of over Rs.5000 crores
Essar Steel, a global producer of steel with an annual production capacity of 14 million tonnes, is a fully integrated flat carbon steel manufacturer with a presence in North America, Europe, Middle East and South East Asia. North American operations comprise a four million tonne steel plant in Canada, iron ore reserves of two billion tonnes, a six million tonne taconite plant (currently being set up). In addition, the company’s Trinity Coal owns six mining complexes that hold an estimated 200 million tonnes of coking and thermal coal.
The company’s products find wide acceptance in a range of highly discerning consumer sectors, and its versatile flat steel production capacity includes integrated facilities from 5-m wide plates, hot rolling, cold rolling, galvanizing and color coating, and pipes.
