Essar Steel Records 35% Growth in Finished Steel in Fiscal 1st Quarter

Essar Steel, part of $17 billion Essar group, reported the production at 1.07 million tonnes finished steel from its Indian operations during first quarter of 2011-12, reflecting a robust growth of 35.44% compared to the year-ago first quarter.
 
Operating from India’s largest, single location production facility at Hazira in Gujarat, Essar steel also produced 1.14 million tonnes of crude steel in the first quarter, reflecting over 41% growth compared to the 0.81 million tonnes of crude steel produced in the comparable year-ago quarter.

Essar said it is close to completing its project to expand annual steelmaking capacity to 10 million tonnes. As part of this expansion, Essar Steel has started production two ironmaking units – a blast furnace with a capacity of 1.73 million tonnes (under stabilization) and a DRI unit of 1.74 million tonnes — as well as a 2.5 million tonnes/year capacity Conarc furnace, 1.45 million tonnes/year continuous caster and 3.5 million tonnes/year CSP mill.  The company also recently started India’s first 5-meter wide plate mill, which has an annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes/year and is currently under stabilization.
