Essar Steel Reports 60% Increase in Crude Steel Production in April 2011
05/16/2011 - Essar Steel recorded over 60% growth in crude steel output during April 2011 compared to same month a year ago—397,000 tonnes vs. last year's 247,000 tonnes.
Essar Steel, operating from its production facility at Hazira in Gujarat, recorded over 60% growth in crude steel output during April 2011 compared to same month a year ago—397,000 tonnes vs. 247,000 tonnes last year.
For rolled flat products, Essar Steel produced 337,000 tonnes compared to 238,000 tonnes last April, an increase of nearly 42%. The company claims to be the second largest flat steel producer in the private sector in India and account for 20% of total flat steel production capacity in the country.
Essar Steel is close to completing the expansion of its annual steelmaking capacity to 10 million tonnes. As part of this expansion, Essar Steel has already commissioned two ironmaking units – a blast furnace with an annual capacity of 1.73 million tonnes and a DRI unit of 1.74 million tonnes, as well as a 2.5 million tonne/year ConArc furnace, a 1.45 million tonne/year continuous caster, and a 3.5 million tonne/year CSP mill.
According to the company, once the expansion is completed, Essar Steel will be the country’s largest flat steel producer in a single location. The company also recently commissioned India’s first 5-meter wide plate mill with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes/year.
