EU Tightens Steel Import Quotas, Raises Tariffs on Excess Volumes
07/01/2026 - The European Union, effective today, has limited its tariff-free steel quota and increased the levy above that quota in several categories of steel products, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The new system will decrease imports not susceptible to tariffs by 47% to 18.3 million metric tons. Imports above this will be subject to a 50% levy. Half of the tariff-free quota will go to countries with free trade agreements with the EU, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“We are providing market participants with predictability through clear and transparent quota distribution rules, while applying a fair and objective methodology,” said Maros Sefcovic, a trade negotiator for the bloc.
