Feralpi Stahl Launches €220 Million Green Rolling Mill
05/16/2025 - Feralpi Stahl, part of Feralpi Group, announced the completion of its €220 million Danieli-supplied green rolling mill at its facility in Saxony, Germany.
“It is crucial to urgently address the issue of high energy prices, which has a heavy impact on the competitiveness of our industry, and to recognize the centrality of ferrous scrap as a strategic raw material for a circular economy and resilient manufacturing,” said Giuseppe Pasini, president of Feralpi Group.
The company said the Danieli technology features a new production method for rebar in coil. While before, it was a two-stage process of hot rolling and cold stretching followed by spooling, now the wire rod is processed directly from the rolling vein into a spooled ring.
The upgrade supports coils up to 8 metric tons while cold processing eliminates the need for stretching and spooling for part of its range of products. However, some of the cold stretched ring production and production of mesh and spacers will remain as part of the mill’s downstream processing, the company said.
Feralpi Stahi said the continuous hot endless rolling process prevents scope 1 CO2 emissions. It is one of two German steel mills awarded with the EU’s eco-management and audit scheme label for emissions far below the permitted standard.
