Gerdau Lays Off Workers Despite Expansion Intended to Retain Employees
01/30/2013 - Gerdau Long Steel North America, which is working on a US$47 million expansion of its St. Paul, Minn., plant that is intended to retain jobs, is laying off 31 employees, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports.

The Pioneer Press reports that after the layoffs, Brazil-based Gerdau will have about 340 workers — 10 more than the 330 required under provisions of a forgivable loan the company received from the St. Paul Port Authority.
A company spokesman said the layoffs are being made due to "market conditions…"
