Germany’s Merz Gives Support to EU Steel Tariff Plan
11/06/2025 - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is supporting a European Union plan to discourage steel imports by way of a tariff-rate quota system that includes a 50% percent penalty, reports the Reuters news service.
Speaking after a meeting with German steel industry executives, union leaders and state officials, Merz said his country’s steel industry is in an “existential crisis” and that preference should be given to domestic and European-made products.
“There are proposals at the European level, and we agree that we want to support them," Merz said, according to Reuters. "The debate even turned to whether we could accelerate the whole process with France."
