Greensteel Australia to Build US$500 Million Steel Mill

The company said the site will be the first in the country to run fully on electricity. The site previously housed BHP Newcastle Steelworks. It will produce an estimated 600,000 metric tons of finished steel annually for the housing, transport and energy sectors.

“Australia stopped building steel mills a generation ago. Thanks to the leadership of the NSW and Federal Governments, we’re building again. They’ve made it possible to bring manufacturing home to Newcastle, where Australian steelmaking began and where it never should have left,” said Romany Ibrahim, chief executive officer of Greensteel Australia.

The site will begin with production of reinforcing bars, with wire rod and coil planned for future stages. It will employ about 200 full-time staff, the company said.

“Because there is no gas anywhere in our process, it also means lower embodied carbon in the homes and infrastructure this country needs. That’s a win for builders and home buyers, and a win for the Hunter,” said Ross Garnaut, chairman of Greensteel Australia.

The company said the modernization of the site will begin before the end of 2026. The main equipment will be supplied by Danieli and is expected to arrive in October 2027. The mill will be operational by January 2028.
Another announcement covering stage 2 will be made in the coming weeks.
