GSCC: Launches Two-Year Review of Steel Climate Standard, Certifies Duferco’s CASEI and SBET
04/09/2026 - The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) announced it will begin a two-year review of the Steel Climate Standard and the Supplemental Technical Guidance that supports its implementation, along with certifying Duferco Travi e Profilati S.p.A.’s Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET).
The two-year review will go over all aspects of the Steel Climate Standard. This includes emissions measurement methodologies, certification requirements, target-setting frameworks and alignment with international climate goals, the council said.
“This review reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and to keeping the Standard aligned with where the science and the industry are headed. We welcome input from every corner of the steel value chain and society because the strongest standards are shaped by the broadest perspectives,” said Adina Renee Adler, executive director of the GSCC.
The first step in the process includes opening a formal stakeholder comment period from 9 April through 23 June 2026. This is intended to provide feedback on the existing standard and guidance.
The certification of Duferco Travi e Profilati continues the GSCC’s momentum in advancing decarbonization in Europe.
“Producing steel from recycled ferrous scrap and operating its flagship San Zeno Naviglio facility on green energy, Duferco demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is built into the foundation of production,” said Adler.
The GSCC said Duferco’s CASEI and SBET were third-party verified by RINA Services SpA. In 2022, the company had a base value of 1.13 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel. It set an interim target of 1.01 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2030 and a long-term target of only 0.12 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel by 2050, in alignment with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard.
“This achievement confirms the validity of our approach, based on the use of recycled raw materials, the efficiency of production processes, and the use of renewable energy. We have defined clear and measurable targets, aligned with the most rigorous international standards, because we believe that the transition to a low-emissions steel industry must be built on transparent and verifiable data,” said Simone Campanella, general manager of Duferco Travi e Profilati.
