Hertwich Engineering Commissions Horizontal Caster for NALCO

Hertwich Engineering, Austria, has successfully commissioned a horizontal continuous caster for T-bars at the National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO) in India.

The plant forms part of an expansion project at the Angul works in the state of Orissa. The project will expand NALCO’s annual capacity to 115,000 tonnes, of which 60,000 tonnes of T-bars will be produced on the new horizontal caster.

The caster, which is 3000 mm wide, is used to continuously cast three strands of 850 x 300 mm T-bars, which are then sawed to lengths of 1050 mm. Hertwich Engineering’s scope of supply included the casting plant with flying saw as well as the downline transport and packaging facilities.

Horizontally cast T-bars have several distinct quality advantages, including a fine, uniform microstructure, minimum inclusions and oxides, no surface cracks or pores, and an exact geometry.
